The women in our community need education and stability to thrive. Some are still carrying around the burden, hate, and anger of our ancestors. Rikers is not the place for them.
On Tuesday, August 18, the 100th anniversary of the first woman to vote, the Justice 4 Women Task Force rallied outside of the Rikers Island sign to uplift the voices of women, past and present, who have survived detainment on Rikers. The Task Force also honored those we have lost due to Corrections brutality and the dangerous conditions in which people are detained on Rikers. Advocates and people directly impacted by the justice system joined in-person and on Zoom as speakers shared personal stories and chanted #WhatAboutHer? The Justice 4 Women Task Force has been hosting #WhatAboutHer rallies throughout the summer to draw attention to the stories of women harmed by police and Corrections brutality that are often overlooked.
